Why
is a tripod head possibly more important than your tripod?
Just
as your car rides on your tires, your camera rides on your tripod
head.
Normally
I prefer a monoball head, such as that by Arca-Swiss or
the alternative by Kirk. But for a 4x5, especially for a
$20,000+ digital camera, it is more secure to have a geared head
with brakes (and security lock). You need to be sure that your
tripod head does not (can not) tilt over unexpectedly.
I
tried out a variety of tripod heads. I liked my Gitzo
BigBall head, but it disappeared during several years storage
in a remote area of Campeche, Mexico. The Manfrotto head
was probably too large and heavy for anyone to steal, so I was able
to salvage this several years later.
This
tripod head has seemingly had a rough life. Calculate what the
poor photographer who used it had to live through). The white encrustation
is limestone from dripping water in this Karst area of Mexico. However
the head still works and we are using it in Guatemala.
You
can obtain this tripod head almost anywhere since Manfrotto
