LinoColor
is the favorite for prepress professionals
but MagicScan and Binuscan are promulgated by UMAX. SilverFast scanner
software is catching up fast with a blitz of publicity.
Silver
Fast offers the widest range, from
35mm slide scanners to high-end tabloid sized flatbed
scanners. SilverFast is "Made in Germany," as is LinoColor,
from Heidelberg CPS.
We
are doing reviews in our German office in Essen at the moment, and
our two Umax scanners
are in our new office in St Louis (MO, USA).
Thus
for the present we will be reviewing LinoColor
from Heidelberg CPS first. After SilverFast arrived, however, we
never loaded LinoColor again. SilverFast was so much easier to use.
SilverFast
is available for most Umax and LinoColor-Heidelberg scanners, for
Nikon and now for Polaroid 35mm scanners as well. More information
on SilverFast can be obtained directly from LaserSoft Imaging, www.silverfast.com
Reviews
of other scanning software will follow, keeping in mind that we
are also testing all kinds of other hardware and software as well
as photo studio equipment. For example, we are finding that the
Creo scanner software is outstanding (naturally this high-end software
works only on Creo EverSmart
scanners).

Now
being prepared, FLAAR reports by the Senior Review Editor
on flatbed scanners for prepress, photo archives, and
museums. Additional reports evaluate what scanner(s)
are best for digitizing your slides and photos for
digital printing, especially fine art giclee.
