Useful
and Essential Filters for black-and-white Photography
The
yellow will make the outline darker which makes the background appear
lighter in contrast.
Thus
yellow filter will make the clouds look whiter against a dark sky.
Green
filters tend to be extreme--you lose all detail in the shadows.
Polarizing
filter fill help in both B+W and also in color photography if the
subject is reflective. You might also consider polarizing the light
source in certain situations (if photographing obsidian, highly
polished art objects, plates, etc.).
As
this page is updated we will add the names of the respected filter
companies. The best filters are still made in Germany, such as those
of B+W, a division of lensmaker Schneider Kreuzbach.
